Interactions within synchronous virtual classrooms, in addition to allowing for the exchange of information, provide participants with a shared feeling of presence or immediacy that reinforces their membership in the community. The synchronous nature of virtual classrooms—be it via teleconference, voiceover IP (VOIP), or chat—is a highly effective means of establishing personal identity and developing relationships within an online community.
